In response to the adjacency of the site to two massive bridges that are nearby, the design rearranges the three major components of a public stadium in an unorthodox manner with the main entrance for spectators placed at the north end of the stadium, the athlete’s entrance is in the center under the adjacent bridge, and service at the southern end. The atypical arrangement allows for spectators to enter the stadium from a new open-air plaza with views of the track and the Harlem River beyond.
The design of the stadium is over scaled, with its choice of elements, materials, and details in response to the neighboring bridges to avoid appearing dwarfed by comparison.
